More colour-ringed Common Gulls

A recent visit to Millisle in County Down was rewarded with seven colour-ringed Common Gulls, five of which I managed to also photograph (click on image for larger view):

These were all ringed on Big Copeland Island by Shane Wolsey. If you see a colour-ringed Common Gull, please report it to Shane shane.wolsey@btinternet.com

Between the mid-1980s and late-1990s, the number of breeding pairs of Black-headed Gulls in Northern Ireland declined rapidly.

Down from 38,000 pairs to 10,000 pairs, the species has suffered a decline of over 74% and consequently is red listed in Ireland and is a priority species in Northern Ireland.

The main objective of this project is to learn more about the species in Northern Ireland, though determining:

(1) Juvenile survival

(2) Adult survival

(3) Dispersal

(4) Long-distance migration

(5) Breeding/winter-site fidelity
